There’s just one game left on the regular schedule and the Mariners may need to win it to make the playoffs. With the shut out win Friday over Weeks, the Mariners were 4 points up on Amherst. Then the Rams shut out Campbellton the next night and were just 2 behind with two to play. But the Rams couldn't defeat the Crushers Tuesday night and so it all comes down to Saturday. A Yarmouth win and the Mariners are in the playoffs. A Rams loss to Truro and the Mariners are in the playoffs.
The Lions are the team the Mariners need to defeat Saturday at the Mariners Centre. Yarmouth has done well against the Halifax team this year, going 4-1-1-0 with a 7-2 win just over a week ago on Forum ice.
Halifax downed the Lumberjacks Friday night and Weeks Sunday and play two more games before coming to Yarmouth: at home Thursday with Bridgewater and on the road Friday in Summerside. Lots of skating and a long bus ride.
Mariner captain Carl Hayes picked up his team leading 29th goal of the season against Weeks Friday , while Marco Desveaux got his 12th since joining the team in January and James O’Reilly got his third. Desveaux has 4 goals in his three games against the Lions. Hayes and Justin Chaisson have three each.
Robbie Veriker has been Halifax’s big thorn in Yarmouth’s side with 4 goals against the Mariners. Kyle Dilosa, Wayne Bedecki, Dylan King and John MacDonald all have 2 scores against Yarmouth for the Lions.
Saturday's game will close out the regular season.
